XAD-8/XAD-4 resins were used to isolate organic matters in the Songhua River water into strongly hydrophobic, weakly hydrophobie and hydrophilic fractions, and the effects of the three fractions on fouling of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and modified PVDF ultrafiltration membranes were investigated. When the three fractions are filtrated, the specific fluxes of PVDF membrane are 60.6% , 70.8% and 82.0% respectively, while the specific fluxes of modified PVDF membrane are 75. 1% , 77.6% and 86.0% respectively, indicating that the more hydrophobic the organic matters are, the more serious the membrane fouling is. The extent of membrane fouling has no positive correlation to the removal rate of organic matters. In addition, the effect of molecular weight distribution of organic matters with different constituents on membrane fouling was investigated. The results show that compared to hydrophilic natural organic matters with higher molecular weight, hydrophobic natural organic matters with lowermolecular weight lead to more serious membrane fouling.
