Objective:To explore the effect of acupuncture on somatosensory evoked potential(SEP) of the upper extremity in patients with acute cerebral infarction. Methods: 36 cases with acute cerebral infarction were divided randomly into the acupuncture group(18 cases) and the control group(18 cases). The acupuncture group was treated by acupuncture for 3 weeks(5 times a week) in addition to the routine treatment including conventional rehabilitation therapy and other symptomatic treatment). The control group was treated only by the routine method. The Fugl-meyer assessment(FMA),the modifed Barthel index(MBI) and the somatosensory evoked potential(SEP) were detected in two groups before and after treatment. The latency and the amplitude of N9 and N20 in SEP were recoded in two groups. Results: After 3 weeks’treatment, the scores of SEP,FMA and MBI were improved significantly in two groups. The latency was decreased obviously but the amplitude was increased remarkably.Compared with the control group, these changes were more significant in the treatment group. Conclusion: The rehabilitation of the neural function in acute cerebral infarction could be improved by the acupuncture. The SEP examination could be used as an objective means of neural electrophysiological examination to evaluate the efficacy of cerebral infarction.
