Objective: To explore the relationship between the development of mouse embryonic palate and expression patterns of receptors of lectin wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA) and erythrina cristagalli lectin (ECL). Methods: Biotins labeled WGA, RCA and ECL were used as probes to investigate the distribution and dynamic changes of their receptors in the epithelium of embryonic palatal shelves and the mesenchyme by affinity histochemistry. Re- sults: During the development of the murine palatine shelves, the expression levels of 3 kinds of lectin receptors in palatine epithelium were significantly higher than those in the mesenchyme. The expression peak of the WGA receptor in palatine epithelium appeared at d132Z-d148 , the elevating and horizontal-growth stages, but that of RCA and ECL appeared at d158- d1522 , the fusion stage. Conclusion: The 3 kinds of lectin receptors may take part in the regulation of normal development of murine palate, the WGA receptor may regulate the elevating and horizontal-growth of the palatine shelves, and the RCA and ECL may regulate the fusion of the palatine shelves.
