摘 要:乔治.奥威尔的小说《上来透口气》是作者前、后期创作的过渡。小说围绕着日常与例外、胖子与瘦子、现在与过去、名字与自我这四对关系来组织情节,巧妙展现了个体与公共世界间的冲突,表达了主人公保灵寻找独立的主体性,以及这一追寻破灭的悲怆心情。这部小说既脱离了奥威尔早期创作只注重刻画孤独个体的沉闷,又没有后期作品偏重呈现公共世界的残酷,忽视个体丰富性的政论风格,因而是奥威尔小说艺术的成熟之作。George Orwell's Coming Up for Air arranges its plot around four pairs of relationships:those between the usual and the unusual,the fat and the thin,the present and the past,and the name and the self.By doing so the novel successfully displays the conflict between the individual and the public,picturing its protagonist Bowling's pursuit of subjectivity and his sorrow at his failure.As a transitional work between Orwell's earlier and later creations,the novel is free of the author's early tedium of caring about nothing but the lonely individuals,and at the same time it is free of his late pamphleteering style,where he is more aware of the cruelty in the public domain and less interested in the richness of the individual.The novel therefore testifies to Orwell's art of fiction at its prime.
