摘　　要：Maugham＇s masterpiece is the novel Of Human Bondage, illustrating some characters in the society full of hostility, cruelty and deceit. That is to say, many people and episodes are depicted with contradictions between aspiration and secularity, which are specifically antagonisms between a man＇s lofty ideal and general view. And the novel is also about solution of contradictions between life and society, such as Maugham＇s sad family, school years, college times, hospital practice and life difficulty. Indeed, Of Human Bondage is for some essence of life, highlighting specific difficulty, displaying people＇s solicitude, criticizing social wickedness, including the author＇s individualism and strangeness, as well as his strict attack on the reality.
