Objective To analyze the differences in personal beliefs about and attitude to sleep between insomniacs and good sleepers and to identify the wrong awareness about sleep in insomniacs. Methods 35 insomniacs and 39 healthy subjects were measured by Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep Scale (DBAS) and the insomniacs also were measured by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results The total scores of DBAS did not differ significantly between healthy subjects and insomniacs (87.97 ± 7.88 vs. 85.06 ± 11.19; t = -1.419, P 〉 0.05). There were significances between the two groups in 5 DBAS thematic subscales (P 〈 0.05), but only on the Control/Predictability scale and effects scale, the scores were higher in good sleepers than in insomniacs. As compared with the good sleepers, insomniacs had more wrong awereness about sleep on each item. There were no statistical significances in the total DBAS scores and PSQI in insomniacs (P 〉 0.05). Conclusions Insomniacs have more wrong beliefs about and attitude towards sleep than good sleepers. These wrong beliefs and attitude are mainly showed on the Control/Predictability scale and Effects scale.
