清末地方官员在教案中的难堪处境——以署江西永新知县阎少白死事为例

摘　　要：清末地方官员在对辖区教案的处置中,往往受到多方面的压力,处境非常难堪,有的甚至因此走上绝路,署江西永新知县阎少白之死即为一例。其人"遗状"当中,即陈述了面对教案窘迫而忧愤的情事。尽管对其遗状真伪以及其人实际死因的说法当时存在颇大歧异,但通过循迹考察相关教案的情势,自有助于更明晰地了解和认识清末地方官员特别是其最基层官员,在教案中较为普遍和惯常的处境状况。In dealing with Christian-involved cases the local officers in late Qing Dynasty were usually in an awkward situation with pressures from all groups.Some of them found the pressures so unbearable that they decided to get off from the matters permanently.One typical example is the death of Yuan Shaobai,then Chief of Yongxin County in Jiangxi.In his ＂Left Testament＂ Yuan described the awkward and infuriating situation he faced in the Christian-involved case.Though then there were great disagreements in the authenticity of the left testament and the real cause to his death,it is possible to survey the circumstances of the case and find out the common and regular situations that confront the local officers,particularly grass-root officers.
