As the examples show in this paper, the possibility of an English noun's occurring in the singular or plural form is a complex issue, and the three-way classification(singular count, plural count, and singular mass) has turned out to be too crude,in that there are nouns which do not fit into any of the three categories. In this paper, while discussing the conceptual basis of English "number" in terms of plexity, boundedness, and dividedness,we challenge Talmy's claim that "plexity is,of course, equivalent to the traditional linguistic category of 'number' with its component notions 'singular' and "plural'," pointing out that this misconception, which is quite popular among Chinese English learners, may lead to confusion in using singular and plural forms.
