摘　　要：语言既是文化的产物又是文化的载体,学习语言意味着学习相关文化。汉语方位词"东"、"西"蕴涵着大量文化信息。本文从汉英对比角度出发,探讨其文化内涵,并对某些含"东"、"西"的词语英译进行了对比分析,指出比较它们在汉、英两种语言中的异同,对当今跨文化交际及英语翻译教学有较好的指导意义。Language is the product and carrier of culture.Learning a certain language means learning its culture.The Chinese direction nouns of ＂东＂ and ＂西＂ contain a lot of cultural information.On the basis of exploring the cultural connotations of them in a comparative method and making a comparative analysis of the English translation versions of some Chinese expressions containing ＂东＂ and/＂西＂,this paper points out their similarities and differences of the two languages.This study is meaningful to intercultural communication and English translation teaching today.
