Objective: To analyze DNA damage of umbilical cord blood(UCB)lymphocytes and related factors in neonates from an e-waste recycling area. Methods: Full-term neonates were selected,15 from e-waste recycling area-Guiyu town(exposure group)and 10 from Shantou city(control group). The single cell gel electrophoresis was done to evaluate DNA damage of UCB lymphocytes and questionnaires were used to analyze related factors. Results: Compared with the control group, there was increased DNA damage of UCB lymphocytes in the exposure group. The medians of tail length(21.9 vs 5.7),the percent of tail DNA(4.0 vs 1.0)and tail moment(1.7 vs 0.2)in the exposure group were significant higher than those of control group(P0.001).There was increased DNA damage of UCB lymphocytes in pregnant women who living in Guiyu or have lower educational level, whose husbands smoking or involved in e-waste.Fish and meat consumption of pregnant women were negatively correlated with DNA damage. Conclusion: DNA in neonates from Guiyu town is damaged at different extent, which may due to environmental pollution caused by e-waste recycling.
