摘　　要：大学英语阅读课虽然已开设多年，但并未达到预期的效果，学生的“阅读”仍存在着较大的问题。本文从阅读的重要性、当下阅读课呈现的弊端、阅读课应该抓什么、“新世纪大学英语系列教材”《阅读教程》（第五至八册）的编写思路等几个方面，探讨阅读课的任务以及《阅读教程》（第五至八册）为完成这些任务所作的努力。College English Reading, a course functioning for years, has regrettably fallen short of people＇s expectations, as ＂reading＂ still poses a problem for most of the students today. Focusing on its importance, its current weaknesses looming large, its major tasks and the guidelines for the compilation of An English Reading Course （ Books 5 - 8 ） , part of the ＂New Century College English Coursebook Series＂, the present paper discusses the role of College English Reading and the effort invested to fulfill the role by An English Reading Course （ Books 5 - 8 ）.
