Objective To discover the association relations of the single herbs and herb-pairs of formulae for consumptive lung disease by data mining method to analyze and study the compatibility laws of the prescriptions. Method Based on the features of the herb-pair and compatibility of the past and present formulae used for consumptive lung disease, 261 formulae for consumptive lung disease were collected to detect association relations of the single herbs and herb-pairs by frequent pattems and Apriori algorithm respectively. Result The herbs most commonly used by physicians of past generations have the function of dissolving phlegm, suppressing cough, relieving asthma, tonifying qi, nourishing yin and generating fluid, such as Radix Platycodi, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, Panax ginseng, Radix Ophiopogonis, etc. The modem physicians chose the herbs more concentrated than the ancient physicians, and in the meantime, they often used some herbs rarely used by the ancient physicians, such as Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, Angelica sinensis, Rhizoma Chuanxiong, etc. Conclusion It is significantly different between the ancient and modem physicians in using herbs with a higher frequency in formulae for treating consumptive lung disease.
