科技名词翻译与档案意识——漫谈“水利”一词英译的历史变迁

摘　　要："水利"一词的翻译,经历了hydraulic engineering,water conservancy和water resources等为主流的不同译法,至今没有统一。它启示我们统一对传统科技名词的翻译,必须利用档案了解名词的含义及其变化、考察历史上的习惯译法。翻译工作者应该在国家权威机构主导下积极参与其中,群策群力促进科技名词的统一。The translation of the Chinese technical term＂shuili＂has troubled many Chinese-English translators.We have ready in our hands the translated terms：hydraulic engineering,water conservancy and water resources,etc.But so far no unified term is well accepted or authorized.To solve the problem, we should learn the meaning of the terms,its changes and traditional translations in the history by archives.With reference to the terms issued by the authorized Chinese linguistic institutions,the traditional technical terms can be translated more reasonably and technically.
