Objective: To study the expression of survivin protein in non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) and its relationship with the apoptosis index(AI). To investigate their relationships with the biological behavior, occurrence and progress of lung cancer. Methods: Immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expression of survivin in NSCLC and adjacent tumor tissues. The AI was detected by Terminal-deoxynucleoitidy Transferase Mediated Nick End Labeling (TUNEL) method. Results: The expression of survivin in NSCLC was significantly higher than that in adjacent tumor tissues (P 〈 0.05). AI of lung cancer cells was lower than that of adjacent tumor tissues ( P 〈 0.05). Survivin and AI were associated with histological differentiation, clinical stage and lymph node metastasis of tumor(P 〈 0.05). A correlation coefficient test showed an negative correlation between the AI of tumor cells and the level of survivin expression in NSCLC (P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion: Apoptotic suppression may play an important role in the oncogenesis and development of NSCLC. Survivin may participate in the pristine genesis and development of NSCLC by inhibiting the apoptosis.
