《红字》中的镜子意象及其叙事意蕴

摘　　要：镜子以及具有反射、映照功能的物体如玻璃、眼睛、水坑、小溪、天体等贯穿于霍桑的小说《红字》之中并构成了一系列的意象组合。这些看似平常的意象却常常出现在情节和人物心理发展的关键时刻,具有非常深刻的寓意。但它们在《红字》的研究中却往往被忽略,至今尚缺乏充分的阐释与分析。本文试图弥补这方面的欠缺,对《红字》的镜子意象进行深入挖掘与分析,认为镜子以及类似镜子的物体不仅承担了重要的叙事功能,并且对人物的心理刻画、性格塑造、自我认证等均具有重要的意义。同时,它们也承载了自我反省的伦理学上的意义,成为心灵框架的隐喻。Mirror and mirror-like objects such as glass and eyes are often used by Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter.Besides,things like sky and water in the stream which are related to mirror also appear in the novel,which,together with mirror and eyes,form a series of mirror images.The seemingly ordinary images always occur at critical moments and appear on important occasions.The mirror imagery is the embodiment of the author’s idea as well as the representation of the characters’ psychology.However,there have been no due and convincing interpretations of the mirror images up to now.This paper intends to make a thorough analysis of the mirror images and tries to interpret them from a new perspective.It argues that the mirror and mirror-like objects not only perform important narrative and ethical functions,but are also important to the characterization and the characters’ self-cognition as well as self-reflection.
