Using Engagement Resources to Construct Interpersonal Meaning in Academic Texts: A Case Study of Chinese Students’ MA Theses

摘  要:本文从对话的角度审视学术语篇作者如何利用介入资源构建对话空间,以实现与读者结盟的写作动机。分析结果表明,在英语专业硕士学位论文的结论部分,作者基本能够根据学术社团规约使用对话策略,通过收缩资源与扩展资源的互补性配置构建语篇人际意义。具体来讲,作者主要运用背书、反对和否认等收缩资源压缩对话空间,以较高的人际代价提出观点,强调命题的可靠性;同时作者还借助于接纳和承认等扩展资源扩大对话空间,承认其他观点存在,从而营造友好的对话氛围。本文对学术英语写作教学具有一定的指导意义,认为过多使用收缩资源会使语篇的语气略显生硬,因此,对话修辞策略的应用能力的培养、提高需要得到更多重视。The present article investigates how the engagement resources are used in the conclusion section of Chinese MA students' theses,aiming to capture the dialogic backdrop interpersonally construed in academic texts,which value reader alignment considerably.The study shows that a complementary configuration of contract and expansion is used.Specifically,the student writers tend to rely on endorsing,countering and denying to propose research findings and simultaneously announce the validity of their proposals.On the other hand,the student writers also use entertaining and acknowledging to open up the dialogic space for alternative viewpoints and therefore lower the interpersonal cost for those who may challenge their ideas.The article attempts to provide a reference point for the pedagogical practices of academic writing,suggesting that the student writers need to employ more appropriate rhetorical strategies of dialogism.
