摘 要:Every generation of Nigerian playwrights has certain arrowheads or front liners whose works enjoy greater recognition both in terms of intellectual and ideological discourse and practical patronage. For instance, Wole Soyinka and Clark are usually associated with the first generation of Nigerian playwrights, while the second generation has the name of Femi Osofisan towering above others thereby making him the dominant force to be reckoned with during the period. Arguably, in the third generation, the name of Ahmed Yerima performs the same role just as the names of Soyinka, Clark and Osofisan do during the first and second generations of Nigerian playwrights respectively. Although, Yemi Ogunbiyi labeled or categorized Ahmed Yerima as belonging to the second generation of Nigerian playwrights alongside Femi Osofisan, Wale Ogunyemi, Bode Osanyin, Zulu Sofola, Bode Sowande and Comish Ekiye, there have been arguments and counter-arguments regarding this classification. This is due to Ahmed Yerima's sudden disappearance from the literary scene after writing Three Plays in Transition (1980) and sudden reappearance in the mid-1990s. But since then, he has been writing consistently and majority of his plays were written during the third generation period. This paper examines the role of a playwright as the conscience of his society and it uses Yerima's Hard Ground (2006) and The Sisters (2001) for illustration. It establishes that a playwright's social vision is inextricably linked to the concerns of his society. The paper examines how the two plays Hard Ground and The Sisters express sensitivity to the socio-cultural realities of Yerima's environment and of his time. The paper classifies Ahmed Yerima as a writer in the third generation of Nigerian playwrights, especially as the plays being examined were written during this period.
