Debates on the English Translation of Classical Chinese Poetry

摘　　要：自从十八世纪《诗经》的英译本在英国出版发行以来,中国古典诗歌英译一直存在着很多争论。文章就古汉诗英译的历史及各种争论从可译还是不可译;直译还是意译;自由体还是格律体;改写还是翻译四个方面进行了概述,并指出对译诗不应仅局限于字面上的"信",原诗与译诗达到的对等的效果和译诗读者与原诗读者相类似的感受也是要考虑的"信"。Since the publication of English version of The Book of Poetry （Shijing） in England in 18th century, many debates have been aroused among scholars about classical.Chinese poetry translation into English. The paper begins with a brief review of the history of classical Chinese Poetry translation, and then discusses some debates on it from four aspects, i.e. translatability vs. untranslatability; literal translation vs. liberal translation; free verse vs. metrical verse; adaptation vs. translation. It concludes by pointing out that the faithfulness of the language should not be the only attention paid in poetry translation, but emphasis should be given on the equal effect to both the readers of the source texts and that of the target texts.
