This paper introduces the Cultural Revolution narratives written in the English language, which has been very popular on US reader market in recent decades, by the so-called New Immigrants. The author lists three elements accountable for the obvious orientalism in these narratives, namely, the restriction of the publishing market, the extra preference for autobiography and the overuse of stereotypes about China. Meanwhile, after closely analyzing the relevant criticism which employs orientalism discourse to interpret these Cultural Revolution narratives, the author contends that, on the one hand, orientalism theory can, to some degree, appropriately interpret this particular literary phenomenon; on the other hand, overinterpretation and prejudice could also lead to oversimplified reading of these works.
