Objective To search the differentially expressed proteins in the serum of patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysm. Methods Eight patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysm, admitted to our hospital from July 2007 to September 2009, and 8 healthy adults (controls) were recruited in our study; two-dimensional differential in-gel electrophoresis (2D DIGE) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization - time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) were employed to analyze and identify the differentially expressed proteins in the serum of these patients and controls. Results As compared with the control group, patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysm had 29 differentially expressed proteins those enjoyed more than 1.5 folds differences; protein at spot 579 was expressed as low as 1.81 folds in the serum of patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysm as compared with that in controls (P=0.008); the protein was identified as afamin using MALDI-TOF-MS. Conclusion The low expression of afamin in patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysm probably contributes to the formation and expansion of intracranial aneurysm.
