摘 要:The present research, a case study, analyzes the pronunciation problems encountered by a Chinese learner of English on the assumption that these pronunciation errors were systematic, and not randomly made and that these errors reflect interference from the different sound systems, different rules of combining sounds into words and different prosodic patterns of the learner's native language. Data were collected over a prolonged period of time, twelve weeks, when the present researcher acted as the subject's pronunciation tutor for her International Teaching Assistant Oral Fluency in the Intensive English Program of West Virginia University. Following the Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis, potential pronunciation difficulties for the subject were listed by comparing the English sound system to that of Chinese. Speech samples of the subject's pronunciation were taken through oral readings and spontaneous speech, both recorded monthly. By using Error Analysis, the subject's pronunciation difficulties were diagnosed into seven types, and three categories were used to analyze these errors on the basis of her native language linguistic background. These analyses help to establish a clear understanding of some characteristic pronunciation problems the subject has had, which impede her comprehcnsibility and oral fluency.本案例通过对比分析假设((ContrastiveAnalysis Hypothesis) 和错误分析 (ErrorAnaIysis),诊断了一个中国英语学习者的发音问题。研究对象为一名在美国西弗吉尼亚大学生物系就读的研究生,实验材料采用了普斯特和罗宾内特(Prastor&Robinett)的"诊断篇章"(DiagnosticPassage:1985)和自发式谈话样本(SpontaneousSpeech Samples)。数据采集为期十二周,每四周录音一次。依据对比分析和错误分析,结合其母语语言背景,研究对象的发音问题被诊断为七种类型,三大类别,从而证实这些发音问题不是任意而为,而是与其母语发音系统,母语组音规则和母语韵律方式密切相关。
