Objective To investigate the effect of continuous passive motion (CPM) on knee joint stiffness and myoatrephy of patients with paraplegia. Methods 70 patients with paraplegia were divided randomly into CPM group (n = 38) and control group (n = 32). The CPM group received continuous passive motion treatment, and the control group only underwent traditional passive rehabilitation treatment. The knee joint ranges of passive motion and quadriceps femoris atrophy state before and after rehabilitation were assessed. Results After stay in bed for some time, both CPM group and control group developed knee joint motion limitation to a certain degree. But the dysfunction of knee joint motion range (passive flexion ROM) of CPM group were significantly smaller than the control group (P 〈 0.05). The rate of quadriceps femoris atrophy in CPM group was significantly lower than that in control group (P 〈 0.05). Conclusion CPM may significantly improve knee joint dysfunction and myoatrophy of patients with paraplegia.
