Objective To study the relationship of the expression of aquaporin-4 (AQP-4) in the meningiomas with the peritumor brain edema (PTBE). Methods The edema index was calculated according to the preoperative head MRI in 70 patients with meningiomas, in whieh the expressions of AQP-4 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were detected by immunohistochemical method. The relationship of the expressions of AQP-4 and VEGF in the meningiomas with the peritumor brain edema was analyzed. Results The' oecurrent rate of PTBE was 62.9%(44/70) in these 70 patients with meningiomas. The positive rates of AQP-4 and VEGF expressions were 38.5% (10/26) and 65.4% (17/26) respectively in the no edema group and 90.9% (40/44) and 93.2% (41/44) respectively in the edema group. There were significant difference in the positive rates of AQP-4 and VEGF between both the edema and no edema groups (P〈0.01). The levels of AQP-4 and VEGF expressions were positively related to the severity of the meningioma PTBE (P〈0.05). Conclusion It is suggested that up-regulation of the levels of AQP-4 and VEGF expressions in the meningiomas may participate in the formation of the meningioma PTBE.
