摘 要:MH (Marginalization Hypothesis) as put forward in this paper may well be thought of as an offshoot of the originally Prague-School idea now known as the TM (Theory of Markedness) in that it is formulated on the conceptual basis of a binary opposition of a kind the TM sees as inherent and omnipresent in language and thus intrinsically parasitic upon the same theory. The point of departure provided by the hypothesis resides first and foremost in its distinct assumption that what has been called the marked by the TM practitioners and recognized as a less vigorous and less dominating part of the synchronic system of a language is in fact a fully vital and even creative part of it. For such a unique interest to be explicit, the hypothesis will substitute "marginalization" and "mainstreaming" for the Praguean pair of terms "marking" and "unmarking". This current work applies the proposed hypothesis to investigating a few major processes of word order change undergone by English in the earlier stages of its history in order thereby to test the viability of the hypothesis. Underlying and entwined with the above project is a rethinking of language as a dynamic interplay of history and now. With a view to doing justice to the services rendered by diachrony to the shaping of its synchronic state, the past and the present of a language will be caught in a constant process of interaction throughout the pages of this writing.
