Objective To study the effect of milk or soybean milk intake on blood lipid and glucose in healthy young men. Methods 30 male undergraduate students were randomly divided into milk group, soybean milk group and pure water group. Each group was required to consume the corresponding drinks 1L per day, continuously for four weeks. The levels of triglyceride(TG),total cholesterol(TC),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)and glucose(GLU) were determined before and after the intervention. Results The level of LDL-C decreased from 2.28±0.33 mmol/L to 1.95±0.41 mmol/L(P﹤0.05)in the milk group, and from 2.23±0.27 mmol/L to 1.94±0.37 mmol/L in the soyabean milk group(P﹤0.05).Compared with the pure water group, the level of LDL-C in the milk group and soybean group decreased significantly(P﹤0.01).In addition, the level of triglyceride also decreased significantly in the soya bean milk group(P﹤0.05).The level of TC and GLU in all the groups did not change significantly. Conclusions Drinking milk or soybean milk has no significant effect on blood glucose, but is effective on lowing blood lipid, thus preventing cardiovascular disease such as atherosclerosis.
