OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of Survivin, phosphorylation of Akt(p-Akt) and estrogen receptor(ER) in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) tissues and the relationship between these factors and the prognosis of HCC patients.METHODS: The expression of Survivin,p-Akt and ER was detected by western blot assay in the resected liver specimens from 52 patients with HCC and 8 cases of adjavent normal tissues.RESULTS: The expression of Survivin and p-Akt was positively correlated to the tumor recurrence in HCC patients,respectively(P0.05),and the positive correlation was also observed between the expressions of Survivin and p-Akt(r=0.736,P0.01).No correlation was found between ER and the recurrence of HCC patients(P0.05).Significant differences of disease-free survival rates occurred among subgroups of patients according to the expressions of Survivin and p-Akt.Multivariate analysis revealed that tumor metastasis, positive expression of Survivin and p-AKt were independent risk factors for the recurrence of HCC.CONCLUSIONS: The expression of Survivin and p-AKt in the tissues of HCC closely related to the recurrence of HCC.Survivin and p-AKt may become valuable prognostic factors for HCC patients.
