摘　　要：《华盛顿广场》和《豪门春秋》分别是美国著名作家亨利·詹姆斯和伊迪丝·华顿的早期代表作。作品问世以来,学术界对这两部小说的研究大多着重于女性主义、马克思主义、自然主义等阐释。本文从新历史主义的视角,将19世纪转型期的纽约市作为文本而不是"背景"进行诠释:詹姆斯和华顿通过记述19世纪两大转型期纽约的阶级分布与城市发展之间的内在关系,巩固了当时历史语境下的主导权力话语;作家的个人意识对主流意识形态的抵牾,体现了两位作家颠覆权力话语的创作倾向;但作家的反抗最终还是受到了主导权力话语的遏制。Washington Square and The House of Mirth are Henry James＇ and Edith Wharton＇s early works,which strengthened the mainstream literary discourse of that historical period in their narrations of social classes in relation to the urban development during the two major social transitions in the 19th century.To contradict the mainstream ideology with their personal thinking and awareness expresses their desire to topple down the prevailing discursive power.The endeavor of this kind in their writings is eventually contained by the dominant discursive power.
