Objectives To explore the effects of prenatal chronic hypoxia on blood pressure in rat offspring. Methods Twenty five pregnant SD rats were divided randomly into 5 groups: 4 prenatal chronic hypoxia groups (early, middle, late and whole hypoxia group) and 1 control group. Five male and 5 female offsprings of each group were randmnly selected to study when the descendant rats were 1 month, 3 months and 6 months old respectively. Blood pressures and heart rates of the rat offsprings were measured by noninvasive blood pressure monitor. Results Heart rates had no significant differences among all the groups (P〉O.05). There was no significant difference between blood pressure of 1-month-old offsprings in chronic hypoxia groups and that in control group (P〉0.05). Blood pressure of 3-month-old oflsprlngs in hypoxia groups were significantly higher than that in control group, and became even higher when they were 6 months old (P〈0.05). Blood prcssure of male offsprings in middle bypoxia group was the highest [ (136.80±2.18) mm Hg vs. (110.20±2.18) mm Hg,P〈O.05 ]. Conclusions Chronic hypoxia during pregnancy can elevate blood pressure of aduh rat offspring, especially for male rat offspring.
