摘　　要：人情冲突和伦理困境是文学作品中的显性主题。在美国作家纳撒尼尔.霍桑的代表作《红字》中,一段不伦之恋将几位主人公都置于爱恨情仇的纠葛之中,他们为走出困境,各从其志,救赎自我,终获赦罪的自由。本文从婚姻伦理、职业伦理和人际伦理三个层次解析小说中人物所面临的困境,以及他们为摆脱这些困境所作出的道德救赎努力,由此探究作家霍桑的宗教道德观念以及当时清教社会的伦理制度。Conflicts in human relationship together with ethical dilemma are widely discussed in literary works. The world-renowned American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne portrayed in The Scarlet Letter a passionate and indecent extramarital affair, for which the protagonists in the novel were afflicted with emotional entanglements. They struggled to get out of the predicament by redeeming themselves, and they achieved the salvation of soul. From three perspectives such as marital ethics, professional ethics and interpersonal ethics, this paper explores the plight the characters are involved in, and describes their special efforts to be freed from the trouble. Hence it is possible to interpret the writer＇s religious beliefs and moral Standards, as well as the ethic system in the Puritan society at Hawthorne＇s time.
