Objective:To explore the significance of COX-2 and VEGF-C expression in head neck squamous cell carcino- ma (HNSCC). Methods:Immunohistochemical method was used to assess the expression of COX-2 and VEGF-C in 104 cases of HNSCC. The clinical pathological significance of COX-2 and VEGF-C expression were evaluated. Results:The positive rates of COX-2 and VEGF-C in HNSCC tissues (69.23% and 74.04%, respectively) were significantly higher than those in the normal oral mucousa ( P 〈 0.05 ). The expressions of COX-2 and VEGF-C were remarkably higher in lymph node metastasis positive patients than those in metastasis negative patients( P 〈 0.05 ). Positive correlation was ob- served between the expression of COX-2 and VEGF-C proteins (r = 0. 366,P = 0.000). Conclusion : COX-2 and VEGF-C were overexpressed and were closely correlated with regional lymph node metastasis in HNSCC. The positive correlation between the two proteins showed that they cooperatively participated in the invasion and metastasis of HNSCC.
