摘　　要：傅兰雅1895年小说竞赛何以仓促收场,学界一直疑惑不清。据最新文献记载,傅兰雅采用两套语言,提出不同标准,影响了结果评判;尽管征文受到普遍关注,还得到教会组织帮助,但来稿普遍庸劣,显示了转型前夜的近代小说状况;加上限时命题、标准突变、偏离核心思潮、触犯上层忌讳等原因,致使来稿未能出版。然而,傅兰雅推动晚清小说近代转型的历史地位仍需重视。There is a doubt in academic circles about why the prize story scheme started by John Fryer in 1895 ends hasti- ly. According to the latest literature, Fryer puts forward different demands for stories well written in two languages, thus af- fecting the process and the quality evaluation. In spite of the universal concern and the missionary help, the stories contrib- uted are inferior, which show the status of modern novel before the transition. The stories are not published because of the proposition in limited time, the abrupt change of demands, the deviation from core thought in topic and the offense of taboo in upper class. Nevertheless, John Flyer is respected because of his efforts to promote the novel transition in the late Qing dynasty and his historical role can not be replaced.
