To investigate the pathogenicity of the SEF14 fimbriae in Salmonella enteritidis, the pathogenicity of mutant strains 50336△sefA and 50336△sefD was compared with the parent strain 50336 in 6-week-old BALB/c mice and 1 day-old Qingyuan chickens via subcutaneous inoculation. The results showed that the LDs0 of the three strains were 19.95, 7.94 and 7.94 cfu in 6-week-old BALB/c mice, respectively. It suggested the virulence of S. enteritidis increased when injected with mutant strains 50336△sefA or 50336 △sefD. The results also indicated that they were highly heterogeneous in their ability to cause death in l-day-chickens, the mortality of 50336 and 50336/ksefA groups were 8.6%, 15%, respectively. Furthermore, the chick average weight-gain at 7-day-old in control group was 26.43 g, and 50336 group was 19.06 g, while groups of 50336△sefA and 50336△sefD were 15.38 g and 18.39 g, respectively. This suggested that the virulence of 50336△sefA was increased in chicken.
