Sudden enlightenment is perceived as the sole approach to "discovering the nature and attaining the way of Buddha". The realization of enlightenment is, on the one hand, an instantaneous experience of sudden revelation, and a hard-won process of Buddhist practice on the other. By achieving sudden enlightenment, a Zen worshiper gains wisdom of existence, which is the so-called highest nirvana wisdom embodied in daily practice. Zen enlightenment is an integration of ontological wisdom and daily practice, which is not the culmination of Zen practice, but a beginning, which signifies not only personal liberation and spiritual freedom, but also a direction toward a newly enlightened world.
