Objective To determine the expression of p73 in bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMNC) of patients with acute leukemia (AL), to study the correlations between p73 and p53, and between p73 and antigen presentation intensity, and to explore the corresponding clinical significance of p73. Methods The expressions of p73 and p53 in BMMNC of patients with AL and of controls were determined by RT-PCR. The immunophenotypes of BMMNC of patients with AL were assayed by flow cytometry. Results The positive expression rate of~ p73 in initially diagnosed ALL group was lower than those in ALL-CR group and control group (P 〈 0.05), that in initially diagnosed AML group was higher than those in AML-CR group and control group (P 〈 0.05 ). The expression of p73 was positively correlated with p53 (r = 0.481, P 〈 0.01) and CD2 (r = 0.447, P 〈 0.05), and was negatively correlated with MPO (r = -0.492, P 〈 0.01 ) in 30 cases of initially diagnosed AML group; while that was not correlated with p53 and antigens in 20 patients of initially diagnosed ALL (P 〉 0.05). Conclusion p73 may play an important role in the occurrence and prognosis of AL.
