摘 要:朱利安·巴恩斯的《结局的意义》无论在标题上还是在创作原则上都借鉴弗兰克·克默德在《结局的意义:虚构理论研究》中提出的虚构作品理论,它不仅颠覆传统小说范式,而且也突破巴恩斯以往小说所确立的传统。该小说始于结局的记忆,也结束于结局的记忆;在焦虑式记忆中,对结局的推测不断地被颠覆。叙事者的道德选择从根本上决定过去事件的记忆或遗忘,影响了小说的叙事结构。因此,《结局的意义》不仅颠覆传统认识论和历史观,而且还质疑了技术道德,为处于后现代危机中的人类提供一种寻求生存意义的范式。Julian Barnes' novel The Sense of an Ending has borrowed not only its title but also its guiding rules of construction from Kermode' s The Sense of an Ending: Studies in the Theory of Fiction. A detailed analysis will reveal that the memory narrative running through Barnes' novel arises from the anxieties about the ending of a world which Kermode believes to have been corrupted by new technologies and social changes. Morality has played an important role in determining what has been remembered or what has been forgotten. Structured in this manner, The Sense of an Ending both challenges conventional views about epistemology and history and makes a critique of technological morality, offering therefore a way of making sense of life for people caught in the anxieties of postmodern dilemma.
