Objective To discuss the relationship of changes between trace elements and schizophrenia. Methods Forty-one kinds of trace elements in serum of 119 patients with schizophrenia were detected using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) and atomic emission spectrometry and compared with 126 healthy controls, combined with different gender, age and clinical courses. Results Eleven kinds of elements(boron, aluminum, strontium, lithium, nickel, antimony, chromium, manganese, potassium, sodium and phosphorus) in serum of those with schizophrenia were significantly increased, while 18 kinds of elements(titanium, germanium, arsenic, cobalt, cadmium, tin, bismuth, thorium, uranium, thallium,La,cerium,PR,ND,gadolinium, copper, sulfur, and zinc) in serum were significantly decreased. There were significant differences in phosphorous, arsenic, rubidium, titanium and antimony,in terms of a connection to gender, and in boron and copper in connection with age. There was no significant correlation of element content in different course of disease. Conclusion Multiple trace elements widely involved in schizophrenia pathogenesis and pathological processes, and the abundance or deficiency of elements may be the underlying factors of central nervous system dysfunction of patients.
