Objective: To study the effect of electro-acupuncture on the expressions of survivin and VEGF in cerebral ischemia as well as their correlation. Methods: The model of cerebral ischemia reperfusion was treated with electro-acupuncture. Then the expressions of survivin and VEGF in the center area and the peripheral area of the ischemic brain tissue were observed with immunohistochemistry. The effect of the electro-acupuncture was ana- lyzed, and the relationship between them was investigated. Results: In the center area, with the elapse of time, the expressions of Survivin and VEGF decreased. In the ischemic peripheral zone both of the expressions were firstly increased. But until 72 h a peak reached, the expressions then gradually reduced. Electro-acupuncture could obviously promote both of the expressions, and there was significant difference between the groups (P 〈 0. 05 ). Conclusion : Electro-acupuncture therapy can effectively alleviate the brain ischemic injury," and the soon- er the intervention goes into, the better therapeutic effect is. The mechanism of action may be associated with the increased expressions of survivin and VEGF. They have synergistic effect on promoting cerebral angiogenesis and protecting nerves.
