摘 要:通过对比分析《红楼梦》五类(103例)"吃"的引申义熟语及其四个英译本的翻译,探讨这些熟语在四译本的理解和再现方面的异同得失及规律性特征。研究发现,各类"吃"熟语翻译对语境依赖程度、译者所处时代、翻译目的、接受语文化及译介行为不同,致使各译本呈现多样性。此外,汉英词典中固化的"吃"熟语表达,因缺乏具体语境和真实语料基础,导致其所提供的释译对文学作品翻译参考存在局限性。This paper sets out to compare and contrast the various renditions of the 103 metaphorical ex- pressions beginning with "chi" (to eat) in the four English versions of the 18th century Chinese vernacular novel Hong Lou Meng (A Dream of the Red Mansion). The purpose of the study is to find out the similarities and differences, the pros and cons, as well as the normative features of the English renditions. Investigation shows that while the renditions of the four translations register a certain degree of dependence on the context of the source text for their interpretation of the metaphorical meanings of the "chi" expression, the renditions also display diversity in the translatorst choices. This diversity can be attributed to the differences in such factors as the time when the respective translations took place, their motivations, as well as the cultural context of the target language. Due to "chi" idiomatic expression, the lack of specific context and real corpus base lead to the referent limitation on translation of literary works.
