《新石头记》与清末民初的文化变迁

摘　　要：清末小说家吴趼人,他的《新石头记》借用了《石头记》(《红楼梦》)中的人物,而核心的情节是写贾宝玉等人"与二十世纪相见"。面对欧风美雨,传统的文化人如何回应西方的挑战?中国怎样才能自立于世界民族之林?这是吴趼人试图回答的问题。他一方面提出了"中体西用"的答案,另一方面又对这个答案将信将疑,新文化人"全盘西化"的立场已呼之欲出。从《新石头记》的新人格理想看清末民初的文化转型,我们对时代精神的变迁可以获得较为亲切的感受。WU Jian - ren, a novelist in late period of Qing Dynasty, applied characters in The Story of the Stone （Dream of the Red Mansion）to his novel, The New Story of the Stone, the core plot of which is the meeting of JIA Bao -yu and others with the 20th century. Confronting the occident, how can traditional literati response to West- ern countries＇ challenges？ How can China become self- independent among the world？ WU Jian -ren tried to an- swer these questions. He put forward the theory of Chinese culture in Western use on the one hand, but kept skep- tism about the answer on the other hand. The total Westernization view of a new cultural scholar seemed ready to come out. From the new ideal personality in The New Story of the Stone,we can have a close touch with the change of Zeitgeist by studying the cultural transformation in late Qing and early Republic of China.
