The 19th-century English missionary in China, Thomas G. Selby, selected and translated a number of Chinese stories for a collection entitled The Chinaman in his Own Stories. One chapter of the book, entitled “Ghost-haunted Melon Field”, was actually a translation of a tale from Chapter IV of Tales from the Yuewei Cottage that narrates an encounter between a night watch named Chen Si and a ghost. This is the earliest known translation into a western language of a story in Chinese. The translator, a western missionary, accentuates the religious message embedded in the original story through adaptation and redaction. What kind of choices and treatments were made in relation to his text by an early western translator as an independent subject, remain relevant today as it sheds light on how Chinese literature and culture may go global.
