In this thesis, the author will talk about the effects of reticence in the novel. Firstly, Lucy' s reticence is a defensive method, which can conceal her sad sufferings, since the sufferings are too painful to narrate. Secondly, Lucy's reticence is not powerless, instead, it gives her a new kind of power: on the one hand, the reticence gives Lucy the power to notice and see the things that others cannot see. On the other hand, the reticence gives Lucy a cover to prevent her from being misunderstood. Lastly, if Lucy had kept reticent forever, we couldn' t have had the chance to read her famous "heretic narrative". Fortunately, she breaks her reticence and explores a suitable way to express herself-- she turns to writing: she shows her true feelings reticently through her "heretic narrative". Through her "heretic narrative" she makes berself, who is plain in appearance, become significant and meaningful, but only for people who can understand her. For those who cannot understand her, she is just a cypher.
