Five broad-leaved plantations (Betula dahurica , Robinia pseudoacacia , Castanea mollissima, Quercus dentate, mixed Betula platyphylla Populus davidiana ) in Beijing mountain area were selected to study the variation characteristics of soil organic carbon (SOC). The relationship between SOC and other soil properties was examined by correlation analysis. The results showed that the highest vertical coefficient variation (cv) of organic carbon content in the soil profile was 77.01% for Betula platyphylla-Populus davidiana mixed plantation, and the lowest cv was 36.36% for Castanea mollissima plantation, with- out similar correlations between SOC content and these soil properties in different soil lay- ers. In the whole soil profile, the SOC content was found to have very significant correla- tions with soil density, with very significant or significant positive correlations with total po- rosity, capillary porosity and non-capillary porosity. Moreover, the correlations between SOC and total nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium and iron content are very significant or significant positive.
