This research tested the Basic Needs Theory through investigating the relationships among perceived autonomy support, physical self-esteem and life satisfaction of high school students in P.E. class, and through examining the mediating role of basic psychological needs and physical self-esteem played in latent variable model. High school students from Grade Six to Grade Nine (n=1 200) completed scales pertaining to perceived autonomy support, need satisfaction, physical self-esteem and life satisfaction. Results from structural equation modeling revealed a good fit of the data to the hypothesized model. It revealed all direct associations between variables were significant. Basic psychological need was a partial mediator in the relationship between perceived autonomy support and physical self-esteem. Besides, physical self-esteem partly mediated the relationship between basic psychological need and life satisfaction. It was concluded that in order to promote students' mental health develop, P.E. teachers should provide autonomy support in class and Basic Needs Theory could provide a solid framework to fit high school P.E. class in our Chinese collective culture.
