摘　　要：在小说《维莱特》中,女主人公露西·斯诺在小说结尾处叙述自己的爱人保罗先生的命运时,使用了开放式结尾———露西·斯诺没有直接告诉我们保罗先生是否从大风暴中逃生,而是让我们读者按照自己的意愿去自由选择。许多评论家都认为小说《维莱特》的开放式结尾破坏了整部小说,是小说中的败笔。但是我认为开放式结尾有其自己的作用,它非但没有破坏小说,反而给小说增色不少。露西·斯诺之所以选择开放式结尾,有她自己的原因。本文中,笔者将分析小说《维莱特》中开放式结尾的作用:首先,《维莱特》中的开放式结尾反映了女主人公露西·斯诺的沉默寡言、间接含蓄。其次,开放式结尾是隐藏女主人公露西·斯诺失去爱人的切肤之痛的保护性方法。最后,尽管开放式结尾反映了女主人公露西·斯诺的欲言又止、优柔寡断,但是开放式结尾却有着它自己的作用———在小说《维莱特》中的开放式结尾中有着一种能量,这种能量能够控制和领导读者,让读者按照作者的意愿去选择保罗先生的命运。Lucy Snowe, who is the protagonist in the novel Villette, uses double ending to deal with the fate of her lover M. Paul--in the end of the novel, she doesn＇ t tell us directly whether M. Paul has survived the storm or not, and she just lets us readers choose it freely. Many critics think the double ending in the novel subversive and a faulty stroke in painting. But I think that the double ending is not subversive, Lucy chooses the double ending for her own reason. In the paper, the author will analyze the functions of the double ending in the novel Villette： Firstly, the double ending in the end of the novel is a reflection of Lucy Snowe＇ s reticence. Secondly, the double ending is a defensive method to hide the sharp pain for Lucy Snowe. Lastly, though the double ending is a reflection of the protagonist＇ s reticence, the double ending [ the reticence] in the novel Villette has a certain kind of power to control and lead the readers, when the readers want to choose the fate of M. Paul Emanuel.
