Brush-holding is the first step and essential technique for learning calligraphy. Ever since ancient times, there are different theories about the cognitive representations of brush-holding approaches. However, a variety of perspectives all eventually point to factors as writing posture, brush holding position, and brush movement. Sitting at desks and on chairs common in modern times, the correct brush-holding way, applying for both biomechanical structure and Chinese character writing principles is as follows: the torso upright slightly forward, elbows moderately buckled and placed on the desktop, the wrist bent outwards, with thumb, index finger, middle finger holding the brush at the first joint of the ring finger.
