Previous research has shown that there is a negative correlation between self-esteem and psychosocial stress.Due to the relatively low level of locus of control in low self-esteem,the psychosocial stress responses are rather strong. However, few studies are dedicated to the investigation of the mechanism of the influence of self-esteem on psychosocial stress response in Chinese culture.Since the individualistic culture emphasizes the individual's capabilities and the collectivist culture emphasizes social approval, this study hypothesizes that self-esteem would affect psychosocial stress response through the mediation effects of social approval in a collectivist culture.A total of 183 participants finished Rosenberg self-esteem scale,Adolescent Self-Rating Life Event Checklist and Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. The results showed that the effect of self-esteem on psychosocial stress response was mediated by social approval.More detailed experimental studies are needed in the future to verify the mediating model,e.g.collecting the objective stress parameters in stress situation.Furthermore,cross-cultural research collaboration can be arranged to enrich and improve the research system.
