During the time of anti -Japanese war, Zhou Zuoren had an important influence on Shanghai' s literary circle after his surrender to the Japanese occupants. There was a strange contrast between his forever disgust to Shanghai and the exalted status he acquired in Shanghai' s literary circle at that time. His interac- tion with the journals such as Gu .]in and Feng Yu Tan indicates his latent psychology: with the dread of being punished by national morality he tried to decorate himself with grace and elegancy, and to find some fellow travellers to dispel his guilty and loneliness. As for the results of literature creation, his friendship with some Shanghai literary youth such as Zhou Li' an and Wen Zaidao, etc. , not only let the Gu Jin become a camp for Zhou' s proses, but also promoted the rush of prose writing in Shanghai during the Japanese occupation.
