E R. Leavis's poetic criticism has won less attention compared with his criticism of the novel. As a matter of fact, his poetic criticism draws a line of "great tradition" of English poetry as well. In particular, his discrimination and criticism of Modem English poetry represented by T. S. Eliot advance the processes of recognition of a generation of new poets and reestablish a new tradition of English poetry by so doing. Leavis values both tradition and modernity. His criticism of Eliot's poems not only establishes and consolidates Eliot's prestigious position in the history of Modem English poetry, but also makes himself a leading poetic critic. This article tries to investigate Leavis's poetic theories by tracing his constant concern about Eliot's poems for about half a century. This study may be valuable for further understanding of Leavis's whole system of poetic criticism and literary criticism. Moreover, it may constitute an important part in Eliot studies.
