Objective To investigate the effect of diabetes mellitus (DM) on establishing the leptomeningeal collateral circulation in patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Methods The cerebral arteries image by CT were completed on 101 patients with atherosclerotic MCAO ( M1, M2 stage) to assess the grades of leptomeningeal collateral circulation. The grades of leptomeningeal collateral circulation between patients with and without DM were compared. Results The were 62 eases ( 61.4% ) with 1 - 2 gread of leptomeningeal collateral circulation in this group, and 39 cases (38.6%) with 3 -5 gread. The difference of the rate of 1 -2 gread between patients with and without DM was no statistical significance ( P = 0. 546 ). The difference of the rate of 1 - 2 gread between patients with DM 〈 10 years and with DM I〉 10 years was no statistical significance ( P = 0. 222 ). The difference of the rate of 1 - 2 gread between patients with high glycosylated serum protein and with normal glycosylated serum protein was no statistical significance (P = 0. 844 ). Conclusion DM is not related with the grades of leptomeningeal collateral circulation in patients with MCAO.
