摘　　要：1895年,中日甲午战争之后不久,傅兰雅便在各大报纸上征求"时新小说",旨在袪除时文、鸦片、缠足三弊。傅氏收得的一百六十二部手稿,失落了一百多年。这是晚清文学史的著名公案。最近这些作品被发现,并影印出版。然而,参赛作者生平大多无考,给进一步研究造成了很大困难。针对这些原稿展开了一系列考证,其中之一便是考证参赛并获奖的作者杨味西及其作品《时新小说》。一是考证杨味西的生平,并举其文章以知人论世;二是从插图、结构和中西对比的主题等三个方面讨论这部作品的艺术特色。John Fryer's writing competition( 1895) was the most mystical case in the study of lateQing literature since the 162 novels have been lost in the past hundred years. Fortunately,these works have been found and published in 2011. The difficulty of the study,nevertheless,primarily rests on the obscurity of the authors. So this essay is one of a series of essays that focus on those competing authors and analyzes the text and context of the authors' life and works. The paper sheds light on the life of a competing author Yang weixi and takes a deep investigation on the artistic achievement of his story The New Age Novel in three aspects,the illustration,the structure and the theme of the Sina-west comparison.
